  • My Journey to the Paradise

"Agar phirdos baroyeh zami asto, ami asto ami asto" (if there is heaven on earth, it is here, it is here) goes the famous saying for kasjhmir, the crown of India. I had heard this phrase since my childhood days and always wanted to visit the place. Recently, I got a chance to explore the place with my wife and son"

  • typo frame Letterpress wooden blocks placed in wooden frames. The colour patina on the blocks reminds me of letterpress printing era. The blocks are in Hindi and Gujarati language and almost 30 to 40 years old.

I use to go for treasure hunt, in small villages of Gujarat to find these. It took me five years to collect, with help of my friends and well wishers.

These frames are going to be part of “Typography Exhibition”

  • The Typo-Table The Typo-Table

FOOD – my love, Typography – my passion... and this is where I bring them to a same table ... literally.

Conceptualised, Ideated and Designed, this Dining table, that means a lot to me. It’s my way to tribute the age old phenomenon of Letterpress and keeps the art alive. With every morsel I eat on this table, I remember and cherish the art of block printing, the sound of old printing press and most of all the creativity and hard work that use to get into printing every single page.

This table demonstrates not only my love and appreciation for this yesteryear art but shows the amount of dedication that has got into collecting, compiling and creating what I call my MASTERPIECE.

With the plan to exhibit this table for the world to view in exhibition 2014, I herein present to you glimpses of my art.

    Hope you will like it.

    Thanks!!

  • back to the basics The prime motto of this calendar, focusing on the terracotta jewelry design, is a salute to the exemplary skills of the jewelry designer, Purvi. To maintain the originality of her creations, the actual jewelry pieces have been re-drawn. The color group has been kept tertiary, on purpose, to maintain the sync with the original creation. And to further augment the elegance of the creation, the calendar has been screen printed on cream colored paper. For the treatment, typography is a deliberate choice as it is very contemporary form of graphic designing and perfectly complements the artist’s jewelry creations. Hence, the calendar is an attempt to feature ‘the earthly context’ of every artistic impression.     2012 Art Direction, Graphic Design, Typography

  • calendar 2012 "crow" Calendar design on theme “CROW” was ideated from 2007, when I thought of designing calendar only in black & white.

Since then the calendar has taken many creative alteration and innovations. Elements like: font, usages of colours, typography style, image treatment, creating typeface, vector to images and calendar utility (in term of dates and days), were created and recreated.

Camouflage of ideas from year 2007 to 2011 along with newer creative streak gave birth to Calendar design Crow-2012. Here’s my design waiting for your critical feedback

    Thanks!!

  • Hindi Typography Hindi is written in Devanagari alphabet and draws vocabulary from Sanskrit.

Devanagari is a form of alphabet called an abugida, as each consonant has an inherent vowel (a), that can be changed with the different vowel signs. Most consonants can be joined to one or two other consonants so that the inherent vowel is suppressed. The resulting form is called a ligature. Devanagari is written from left to right. Devanagari has no case distinction, i.e. no majuscule and minuscule letters.

  • Published Work Some of my calendar designs got published in a design book “365 days-of-design”, which is a collection of best calendars from across the world. The publication house is based in Barcelona, Spain.

Every year, creative design studios around the world design a calendar as a gift for clients and friends. Traditionally, our society use to hang calendars annually on the walls of our houses and even now have been replaced by digital calendars on our mobile phones and computers, some still harbor the ancestral spirit raising its profit to a mere object of design.

  • Crow Calendar Design - 2008 The two main ingredients of this calendar are the form (of crow) and treatment (of typography). To begin with the form, it's the wholeness and simplicity of 'single' color 'black' and the attached adages with the bird crow that inspired me to explore and exploit it as the form for this calendar. Moving on to the treatment, typography is the most 'in' thing in graphic designing. It offers immense creative liberty and space to the designer and hence, I got tempted to use typography as the treatment for this calendar.     2011 Art Direction, Design, Graphic Design
  • CROW 2009 "Calendar Design" Use of just two colors, black and white is deliberate in the calendar. It is done so to maintain the originality of the form (the crow) that has been used. Though color black symbolize darkness and sadness, the bird crow signifies intelligence and is meant to be a good omen in Hindu culture. Such contrast in maxims encouraged me to portray crow as my main form. Coming to the treatment, Typography is the best option when one aims to use negative as well as positive space, effectively. Hence, the outcome of intermingling crow with typography is the artistic creation in front of you.     2011 Graphic Design, Print Design, Typography
  • Calendar Design "CROW 2011" The calendar has two main elements: Crow as the main form and typography as the main treatment. Talking about the form first, it was no random choice to work on the concept of crow. Rather, since childhood I have been fascinated by this bird. There have been several facts about this creature that tickled my ‘interest’ cells. Their symbolization carries various contrasts which inspired me to play and explore the concept of having crows as my calendar theme.
To complement the form, I wanted to adopt a treatment that would again say its own story and would be independent of explanations. Hence, came typography – a form of graphic designing where font type blends with the design and speaks for itself as a part of that design.
The restricted use of colors is a deliberate occurrence to maintain the originality and simplicity of the concept.

  • Calendar Design ‘Gauging Horizons’ The idea behind the projected calendar page was to make a calendar that fits on the ‘already crowded’ work desk and yet serve the purpose. The calendar titled, ‘Gauging Horizons’ is independent of placement. It is designed such that it can be placed either vertically or horizontally. The blue colored horizontal windows mark the slot for copper washer that will actually hold the pages of the calendar together.
The calendar is the outcome of a beautiful confluence of colors and numbers. The use of silhouette for the background and typography for the numbers has no restricted specification. The artist prefers to keep it open for subjective perceptions, same way as gauging the horizon!

  • Project "LETTERPRESS" WOW! Touch wood…This is my first composition made with monotype wooden letterpress blocks. Sizing 2ft by 2ft, wooden framed. I am planning to add this into my exhibition on typography.

From last 2 long years I have been searching for these blocks from old press in city and internationally on ebay which was a reliable source to collect. Family, friends and people around me started calling me crazy person looking for letterpress blocks.

I wanted to share this with you people to get feedback.

  • Signage The project included Way Finders, Information, Caution and Equipment Signage developed for a mega power plant in India.
For obvious reasons (i.e. highest visibility, volatility and safety concern) the Caution Signage is red in color. The rest of them including Way Finders, Information, and Equipment Signage are in the most-preferred- universal-combination of blue, white and yellow. This combination acts as a perfect contrast between the foreground and background, which enhances the readability of message being conveyed on the signage.
At dull and low light areas, I have opted for illuminated sign boards so as to increase the visibility and readability of the signage. Also, graphics and vernacular language (Hindi) are used wherever required to further add to the understandability quotient of the signage.
Material used: Colored Aluminum Composite Sheet (fused on block board)/ Vinyl (radium)/ Powder Coated Square Iron Pipes.
